Apprenticeship Program at the Barnes Aerospace-Motherwell Site

A: Apprenticeship Standard L2 & L3: Apprentices rotate placements in different areas of the business (Engineering, Ops Turning, Ops Milling, Bench, Quality & Inspection), usually for three months at a time.

Q: What is the duration of the Apprenticeship Program?
A: The standard Apprenticeship Program is four years long – L2 SVQ and L3 SVQ Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering. During this time, apprentices spend one day at college and four days on site, with the final year being full-time on site.

Q: How many apprentices does Barnes Aerospace-Motherwell hire each year?
A: We typically engage 2-4 apprentices every few years, depending on succession planning.

Q: When do you normally recruit people to join the Apprenticeship Program?

Advertising typically starts in January/February, with interviews in March/April.

Q: Which schools does Barnes Aerospace-Motherwell usually recruit from?
A.
EKGTA, which is a local training provider for engineering apprentices. Once we have taken on an apprentice, they spend the first 10 months with EKGTA using their training facilities to learn the basics before coming onto our site.

We also have an affiliation with New College Lanarkshire, where apprentices attend one day a week for the first three years.
